May the bridges you burn light the way!
In action movies, the hero doesn’t mind blowing up the bridge he just crossed because he knows he’s on a one-way trip.
Similarly, Spanish Conquistador Hernando Cortez took away the option of failure when he advised his men to “burn the ships.” Cortez made it crystal clear that their only option was to succeed or die! By burning their own ships, the level of commitment from Cortez’s men was raised exponentially. And amazingly enough, they were able to conquer the Aztecs and succeed at something where others had failed for more than six centuries.
Why do you think Cortez and his men were able to do something others had failed at for over 600 years? They succeeded because they had no choice. No way to escape. No way out. There was no fallback position. Their only option was to “succeed or die.”
How would you like to be engaged in a fight with someone who had that level of motivation and commitment?
This is the same level of motivation and commitment (commitment is key!) you must have if you want to do something significant with your life. You must have the courage to burn your bridges and ships. When you (metaphorically) do this, you take away all the excuses you keep giving yourself that are holding you back – that are keeping you from achieving your goals.
Once you do this, once your dreams stop competing with your distractions – there’s no doubt in my mind that you will succeed at whatever you set your mind to.
